How I got here
I knew I would be a writer when I was in the third grade. I had a great teacher who encouraged me when I showed an interest in poetry. In high school, I took creative writing courses while pursuing a major in journalism. I continued that path in college by earning a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in writing from Western Kentucky University. (Go Tops!)
After I graduated, it was difficult to find a job in my field, so I decided to enroll in a master’s program at Bellarmine University. There, I earned a Master of Arts in communication and met some amazing people along the way. One such person helped me to get my first corporate role as an intern on a product development team.
For that role, I wrote user guides and helped with project management, but I knew it wasn’t quite the right fit. I tried to make a career elsewhere before finally discovering the world of proposal writing. I was initially hired as a proposal coordinator, managing graphics, printing, binding, shipping of proposals. About a year later, I was promoted to proposal manager and managed multiple simultaneous pieces for various lines of business. It was the first time I felt that I belonged somewhere. I spent 5 years writing proposals for 3 different companies before deciding to jump into the world of copywriting.
With copywriting, I have finally found where I belong. I am surrounded by creative people who all think outside the proverbial box, and I feel free to bring my authentic self to work every day. It also helps that I get to work from home with my pets at my side.
While I’m not a big poet like I once thought I would be, I’m still telling stories. The stories are for brands to appeal to specific audiences, but they’re stories nonetheless. Plus, I can still focus my creative energy on some personal writing projects outside of work.
